Chapter

Rolf ought to wake up.

He had known this for a long time. More than once since he made the wish, consciousness had begun to steal through him. But each time he was nearly ready to return to the world, some other scene would appear in his thoughts, and he would dive right back into the unknown, engorging his mind with something new he might have missed.

It was easier that way. Learning meant not considering the repercussions of all that the lessons meant.

A scraping sound came from the corner of the room, and though he wished to escape once again, Rolf sighed. It was time. He couldn't escape the world any longer. No matter how much he wanted to.

When he tried to open his eyes, however, they seemed…stuck. Rolf had to rub them several times to get all of the crust off his eyelids. After several failed attempts, they finally fluttered open. Only for him to slam them shut again.

The light coming from his right seemed all wrong. It was intensely bright, far brighter than the light from his window had ever been. And the rest of the room, including the side that should have had another window, was completely dark.

The air was also far colder than it had ever been.

"Rolf?"

Though he had been loath to open them for his own purposes, Rolf's eyes flew open at the sound of Bethan's voice. It had come from somewhere near the bright light. Steps hurried to his side, going so quickly that she tripped over herself and half-fell to the ground beside him.

"You're awake!" she cried, taking his face in her hands. Then she looked him up and down before grasping her hands in his and holding them tightly.

A moment passed before he was able to see clearly, so sensitive were his eyes to the light, but after several hard blinks, Rolf stared.

Bethan's face, which had been round and alive with color the last time he'd seen her, was pinched and thin. Small lines sat at the corners of her eyes, and her clothes were worn and patched in many places.

"What…" He struggled to prop himself up on his elbows, which was harder than it should have been, as his arms and shoulders were impossibly stiff, and looked around.

They were no longer in his room, which would explain the strange brightness to his right. Instead, they were in a cave. The blinding light came from its mouth, and over the cave's mouth poured crystalline water.

They were in a cave.

Rolf pushed himself into a sitting position and looked around further. He had been placed on a pile of blankets on the ground. Another pile of blankets had been made up in the far corner of the cave, and a small fire pit had been dug in the center. They were sleeping on the floor, similar to the way his mother had let him…

His mother.

“Bethan!” he croaked, looking up at her in wonder and awe. “My mother! She’s alive!” He sounded more like a frog than a man, but he didn’t really care.
